Ingredients
– 4 cups all-purpose flour
– 1 teaspoon baking soda
– 1 teaspoon salt
– 1 3/4 cups buttermilk
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C).
- In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, and salt.
- Make a well in the center and pour in the buttermilk.
- Stir until a dough forms, then turn it out onto a floured surface.
- Knead gently for about 1 minute until smooth.
- Shape the dough into a round loaf and place it on a baking sheet.
- Cut a deep cross into the top of the dough.
- Bake for 30 minutes or until the bread is golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.
- Let cool on a wire rack before slicing.
Notes
– For a sweeter version, you can add 1/4 cup of sugar or some raisins.
– Serve with butter and jam for a delicious treat!
